In 1921 tourism to the Canadian Rockies was booming and Lake Louise was quickly becoming the most popular destination to visit. The Canadian Pacific Railway had completed construction on the Chateau Lake Louise but many visitors were looking for more moderately priced accommodation and a property that served afternoon tea. Over the course of the following years, a local family purchased a lot right behind the Chateau on the main road winding up to the lake. In 1923 they opened a log teahouse and in 1925 the teahouse was renovated and Deer Lodge was born with six guest rooms. In 1928 Deer Lodge had grown to 29 guest rooms and prided itself on being able to offer hot and cold running water to their guests.
In 1982 Canadian Rocky Mountain Resorts purchased Deer Lodge and continued to operate the property during the summer months for the next three years. In February 1985, Deer Lodge reopened after several months of major renovations and restorations, allowing the property to be opened all year round.
Many of the architectural features from the original buildings have been restored including the original hand hewn log structure. The Mt. Fairview Dining room is known as one of the best dining experiences in the Canadian Rockies, offering outstanding Rocky Mountain Cuisine. Deer Lodge is the proud recipient of the Award of Excellence given by America's leading wine and sprit authority; The Wine Spectator. The Caribou Lounge boasts magnificent views of the Victoria glacier and surrounding mountains while serving fine dining cuisine in a more casual atmosphere.
Deer Lodge is ideal for guests wishing to experience a unique rustic Lodge with first class cuisine and amazing scenery. In the summer months enjoy glorious walks or hiking around the lake and surrounding area. During the ski season, Deer Lodge offers a complimentary shuttle bus to and from the Lake Louise ski hill.
Deer Lodge accommodates 73 guest rooms, all an eclectic mix of historical character and modern amenities. All rooms feature a private bath, down duvets and pillows, and in room safes. The Heritage and Tower rooms have a telephone, coffee maker and hairdryer. All rooms are non smoking and no pets are permitted on the property.
Heritage rooms are located in the newer wing of the Lodge and have modern amenities. With either one king bed or two double beds and private balcony. The Heritage rooms are the largest room type in Deer Lodge.
